The sword stood for protection. Jonathan gave his protection to David by giving him his sword. (1 Samuel 18:4)
- From this day, Jonathan and David became covenant brothers.
- David had all the reason to ask for everyone from Saul’s house to be killed as vengeance for what their grandfather Saul did to him.
- He instead showed kindness because of his covenant with Jonathan.
